Welcome to Camp Blues
Come join us for Camp Blues 2018 Labor Day Weekend, in Placerville, California, with Brenda Russell, an educational, recreational, and social weekend, for dancers at any level of experience. We focus on dances rooted in African-based movement and American Blues and Jazz movement, tracing how people have danced to the blues and jazz, from the early 1900's up to the contemporary blues dance scene.
Each day we will explore ways of connecting more deeply with our own bodies, deepening our mind/body connection and developing efficient body movement. We will apply that to fundamentals of dance movement and partnering dynamics. We can then respond more articulately to the music, and find the dancer within ourselves.
Over the course of several days you will grow into your role as a blues dancer. You will make connections and share experiences with dancers from different backgrounds and skill levels, study with Brenda, and enjoy practicing your new moves at nightly dance events. You’ll be part of a friendly community of dancers that allows you to focus your time and energy on your learning.
Camp Blues is limited to a small number of campers, which means you get daily individual attention. All the classes fit together seamlessly to give you a holistic sense of blues dancing in a number of different contexts.
In addition to great instruction, the camp offers you plenty of time to learn with others by practicing your new techniques with the other campers. We'll demonstrate how to comfortably and confidently ask fellow dancers for feedback, so the next time you go out dancing, you will know exactly how to get the most enjoyment from your dancing.
